PTE Reading Fill in the Blanks

Simply being familiar with the meaning of a particular word is not sufficient to succeed in the Fill in the Blanks exercise in PTE. The word might be relevant to the topic but not relevant to the sentence or grammatically incorrect. These errors could result in poor scores. Practising Fill in the Blanks questions allows you to identify proper word combinations and eliminate the wrong choices.

In order to develop this skill, here are some exercises based on various blanks with solutions and explanations. Let’s get started.

Understanding the PTE Reading Fill in the Blanks Task

The Reading Fill in the Blanks section of the PTE test is one of its most important sections to measure how well you understand the English language. Gaining a solid understanding of how these questions work will be an excellent starting point.

How to solve the drag-and-drop question?

There will be a short passage that contains three to five gaps. Below it, there will be a shared word bank which includes the correct words and a couple of distractors. All you need to do is click on a choice and drag it right into the empty slot where it fits best.

It is a common misconception that in order to solve this type of problem, you have to focus on the context words alone. But actually, what needs to be done is reading the entire paragraph and understanding its meaning.

Remember that this task affects only your reading score. In the Reading & Writing task, you should fill in the gaps using the dropdown menu, and it will affect both your skills. Using free PTE mock tests is the best strategy to prepare for the test.

What skills does the task test?

The following skills will be assessed during this question:

  • Vocabulary in context: knowledge of the meaning of words within a particular topic;
  • Grammar and agreement: ability to choose the right parts of speech in the sentences;
  • Collocations: knowledge of common academic expressions and word combinations;
  • Logical relationships: Understanding how sentences connect to form a cohesive argument.

PTE Reading Fill in the Blanks Practice Questions with Answers

In order to score well in your test, the first thing that you should do is practice with good materials. The questions that follow here will help test your ability in the academic world. As you go through these focused questions, you will find out where your weaknesses and strengths are in terms of your reading ability. After you are done with these questions, you can visit the PTE free section-wise sample papers for other sections of the test. Here are three sample questions.

Practice Question 1 — Vocabulary and context

Passage:

Urban agriculture is growing at a fast pace, leading to unused urban spaces being converted into green space. Proponents argue that this not only produces fresh produce but also (1) __________ social ties among the community members. However, opponents claim that soil pollution remains an (2) __________ concern in industrial settings. Cities need to have stringent regulations in place to ensure that these agricultural endeavors are truly (3) __________ for agriculture purposes.

Word Bank:

[ challenge | strengthen | hazardous | sustainable | destroy | custom ]

Your Attempt:

Take a moment to decide which words fit into gaps (1), (2), and (3).

Answer Key:

(1) strengthen

(2) challenge

(3) sustainable

Explanation:

  • Gap 1 (strengthen): The sentence sets up a positive contrast using “do more than just produce fresh food”. The missing word must match this positive tone while acting as a verb that impacts “social ties”. “Strengthen” fits perfectly, whereas “destroy” contradicts the context.

  • Gap 2 (challenge): The word “However” shifts the tone to a negative point raised by critics. Soil contamination is clearly a problem, making “challenge” the ideal noun to fit after the adjective “persistent”.

  • Gap 3 (sustainable): The final sentence talks about the long-term viability of these projects. “Sustainable” correctly describes an agricultural project that can safely continue into the future.

Practice Question 2 — Grammar and parts of speech

Passage:

AI tools are rapidly transforming the way that university professors develop their courses. The instructors will have to alter the format of the exams and homework to ensure that students (1) ___________ learn from the content and not rely on text generation software. The new educational approach requires a (2) __________ rethinking of standard essays. Rather than evaluating only the finished work, institutions have begun paying more (3) __________ to the research process.

Word Bank:

[ critically | radical | emphasis | emphasize | critical | superficial ]

Your Attempt:

Analyze the sentence structures to determine which part of speech belongs in each gap.

Answer Key:

(1) critically

(2) radical

(3) emphasis

Explanation:

Gap 1 (critically): We need a word to modify the verb “engage”. Grammatically, this requires an adverb. “Critically” is the only adverb that makes sense here, indicating deep, thoughtful learning.

Gap 2 (sustain): The term “sustain” has a close connection with “living organisms” or “life” and means to support the continuation of life for some time.

Gap 3 (originate): The passage concludes with the discussion of an even greater issue of how life may begin on other planets. The term “originate” is a commonly used one when referring to the beginning or emergence of something.

Practice Question 3 — Collocations and academic vocabulary

Passage:

Biologists investigating the marine ecosystem at the bottom of the oceans have made some surprising discoveries of novel species around hydrothermal vents. These species inhabit extremely hostile environments, which used to be considered totally (1) __________ for any form of life. This discovery changes our understanding of what environmental factors are required for the (2) __________ of life. Mapping such an environment could give us insights into how life can develop (3) __________ other planets.

Word Bank:

[ hostile | sustain | originate | friendly | retain | habitat ]

Your Attempt:

Look for common academic word combinations to fill these gaps.

Answer Key:

(1) hostile

(2) sustain

(3) originate

Explanation:

  • Gap 1 (hostile): The sentence describes extreme deep-sea environments where life shouldn’t normally exist. The phrase “hostile to life” is a standard academic collocation used to describe environments that are incredibly difficult to survive in.

  • Gap 2 (sustain): The verb “sustain” forms a strong collocation with “living organisms” or “life”. It means to support or maintain life over a period, which fits the scientific context of the sentence.

  • Gap 3 (originate): The text concludes by looking at the broader picture of how life begins on other planets. “How life might originate” is a common academic phrase used when discussing the birth or evolutionary beginnings of living things.

Proven Strategies to Solve Fill-in-the-Blanks Questions

 1. Read the entire text

It’s not always reasonable to answer the first question without reading the text entirely. The topic usually provides additional information and clues that cannot be obtained from a single sentence, especially when the following one expands or contradicts the previous one.

2. Identify part of speech

Carefully look at words near the blank and find which kind of part of speech should go there. For example, if the sentence states “The results were highly ____,” then we need to put an adjective there and “significant” would fit better than “significance.”

3. Recognize common word combinations and context clues

There are many combinations of words used together in English. For instance, we conduct research, draw conclusions, and pose a threat. These words usually cannot be interchanged even if their meanings are rather similar. During your PTE Fill-in-the-Blanks practice, pay attention to these combinations and write down those that cause misunderstanding regularly.

4. Use elimination and review the text

Eliminate options that are irrelevant from grammatical and logical points of view and review the complete text afterwards. Does it sound logical? Analysis of the mistakes made during free PTE Mock Tests will help you identify weak question types and maintain consistency.

Mistakes That Should Be Avoided

1) Selecting a word only by its meaning without considering whether it is used properly in the sentence.

2) Not seeing the general idea of the passage and selecting a word that does not fit the passage.

3) Misunderstanding words with similar meanings without analyzing their usage in a sentence.

4) Wasting time on a single blank instead of eliminating incorrect words.

5) Checking answers without understanding why they are correct or incorrect.
