In the PTE Respond to a Situation task, you’ll be presented with a short scenario on the screen, which you can both read and listen to. The scenario will include a question or situation that requires your response. After that, you’ll have 40 seconds to speak and record your answer.

Before you start speaking, carefully read or listen to the situation provided. Make sure you fully understand what is being asked—whether it’s to give advice, make a complaint, offer help, or apologize. This applies to both PTE Academic Respond to a Situation and PTE Core Respond to a Situation tasks.
Organize your answer in a clear and polite manner. Begin with a greeting (if suitable), state your purpose, give supporting details or reasons, and end with a suggestion or conclusion. A simple structure like:
“Hi, I understand that… I would suggest… because… Thank you.”
keeps your response natural and easy to follow.
This task checks how well you can communicate in real-life situations, so use natural, conversational English. Keep your tone polite and friendly during your PTE Respond to a Situation practice. Use phrases like “I’d be happy to help,” “I understand your concern,” or “May I suggest…” to sound confident and professional.
Focus on fluency rather than perfection. Speak smoothly and confidently, avoiding long pauses or fillers like “um” or “you know.” Aim to sound calm and natural, as if you’re having a real conversation.
Stick to the topic and answer exactly what is asked. Keep your response short, focused, and meaningful. Since time is limited, use it wisely to give a complete yet concise answer.
