| Prompt Length | Skills Assessed | No. of Question |
|---|---|---|
| Text up to 60 words | Speaking (PTE Academic), Reading & Speaking (PTE Core) | 6-7 |
You will hear a short tone before the microphone opens. You must start speaking immediately after the tone. If you speak before the microphone opens, your voice will not be recorded. You only get one chance, so stay calm and focused.
Use the 30-40 seconds to understand the text, identify difficult words, and divide the passage into small, meaningful chunks.During this time, silent practice helps you read more confidently when recording begins.
Punctuation marks guide you on where to pause naturally. Commas indicate short pauses, while full stops show the end of a sentence. Semicolons and colons also signal slightly longer breaks between ideas. When beginning a new chunk, your tone should rise slightly, and when finishing it, your tone should fall. Using punctuation correctly helps your reading sound smooth, natural, and meaningful.
Stress the key words that carry the main meaning by saying them slightly louder or with more emphasis. This improves clarity and helps listeners easily understand the message. Nouns, adjectives, and main verbs commonly require stress.
Pronounce each word clearly and fully. Break long or difficult words into syllables to make them easier to say. You do not need a native accent. PTE accepts all accents as long as your speech is clear and easy to understand.
Speak at a steady, natural pace. Avoid unnecessary pauses, repetitions, and restarts. Fluency comes from smooth, continuous speech; not from speaking fast.
Take a calm breath before you begin. Controlled breathing helps you speak smoothly through longer sentences without needing to stop suddenly. It also keeps your voice stable throughout the recording.
If you make a small mistake, continue reading without stopping. Confidence helps your voice sound stronger and clearer. A relaxed facial expression can also improve your pronunciation.
Complete your reading before the progress bar reaches the end. When the word Recording changes to Completed the microphone stops capturing your voice.
Record your voice regularly to check your clarity, fluency, pronunciation, and pausing. Listening to your own recordings helps you quickly identify and fix mistakes.
