About PTE Summarize Spoken Text

In this task, you listen to one audio recording and write a summary that captures the main idea and key supporting points. PTE Academic requires a 50-70 word summary after listening to a 60-90 second audio clip, and you have 10 minutes to complete your answer. PTE Core uses a shorter 45-75 second audio and asks for a 20-30 word summary with 8 minutes to complete the task.

Summarize Spoken Text Tips

These tips help you listen actively, take better notes, and write summaries that score high.

Listen for the main idea first

The audio usually begins by introducing the main topic. When you identify this quickly, you can focus on the supporting details more easily. This helps you keep your summary clear and balanced.

Take short and organised notes

Note only keywords such as names, reasons, causes, examples, or solutions. This gives you a clean structure for your summary. Good notes help you avoid forgetting key points.

Pay attention to connectors

Words like first, however, therefore, in conclusion, and for example, guide you through the speaker’s ideas. These words help you understand how the lecture is organised, making it easier to pick the most important information.

Focus on meaning, not on remembering sentences

You do not need to copy the speaker’s exact sentences. Instead, understand the message and rewrite it in your own words. This ensures your summary is original and matches the scoring requirements.

Keep your sentences clear and correct

Use simple grammar that you can use confidently. Incorrect structures lower your score, so it is better to write short, clear sentences that communicate the main idea correctly.

Check your spelling and punctuation carefully

Spelling mistakes or missing capital letters reduce your score. Always leave one minute to check your summary and fix errors. Make sure your summary reads smoothly.

Stay within the word limit

Writing too much or too little affects your score. Keep checking the word count while writing. A controlled and precise summary always scores higher than a long and unfocused one.
