PTE Listening Fill in the Blanks Practice helps you practise typing the correct missing words while listening to short audio clips. You learn to recognise specific words, understand context, and improve spelling accuracy.
In both PTE Academic and PTE Core, Fill in the Blanks requires you to listen to a short audio and complete the transcript by typing the missing words. The audio is 30-60 seconds long and plays only once with 2-3 questions. In PTE Academic, this task is called Fill in the Blanks (Type In) and assesses only the Listening module. In PTE Core, the task is called Fill in the Blanks and assesses both the Listening and Writing modules. You must type each word exactly as spoken, and scoring is based on spelling and accuracy, with partial credit for each correct word.
| Prompt Length | Skills Assessed | No. of Question |
|---|---|---|
| 30-60 Seconds | Listening (PTE Academic), Listening & Writing (PTE Core) | 2-3 |
Use these strategies to improve accuracy and avoid losing marks on spelling and missed words.
This tip helps your brain prepare for the context. When you skim, you understand the topic and the flow of the text, which makes it easier to recognise missing words. You should focus on nouns, proper nouns, and repeated ideas.
Your understanding improves when you follow the speaker’s overall idea. This makes it easier to identify words that fit naturally into the sentence. Focusing on meaning also prevents confusion when words sound similar.
Note-taking helps you capture words without worrying about spelling during the audio. Write down short versions or approximate spellings, then correct them after listening. This reduces the chance of forgetting keywords.
Grammar patterns guide you toward the correct word type (noun, verb, adjective). This helps you confirm whether the word you heard fits correctly. It also prevents inserting a word that sounds right but is grammatically wrong.
If you pause or focus on one word, you may miss the next one. Staying calm and listening continuously helps you capture the entire sequence of missing words. Keep your eyes on the transcript but your ears on the audio.
Correct spelling is essential because each word earns marks only when spelled correctly. Check for plural forms, verb endings, and common spelling patterns. A quick review reduces mistakes before clicking Next.
Use the time after playback to compare your notes with the text. This step ensures you select the most accurate words with the correct spelling. Reviewing also helps you catch small errors that would otherwise lose marks.
Both tests use the same format, but PTE Academic places slightly more emphasis on academic vocabulary, while PTE Core focuses on everyday workplace and real-life language. Scoring rules and task structure remain almost identical.
Each correctly spelled word earns one mark in both tests, and partial scoring applies. There is no negative marking for incorrect words.
The audio lasts 30-60 seconds in both exams and plays only once. You must rely on careful listening and quick note-taking to capture every missing word.
